MONOLODGE GOES TO THE TONYS! (WELL SORT OF)

Hooooly moly Sunday was just about the best day ever!

Let me start from the beginning. I had brunch with a couple friends and then went to the Met, which is always lovely. They have a special exhibit called "Punk: from Chaos to Couture" which chronicles the progression of the punk rock movement from political, anti-establishment roots, to its high fashion present. It’s a gorgeous, cohesive installation and very much recommended. But for this theatre geek, the highlight of the night was hands down the 67th annual Tony Awards. First, me and some friends from the Stella Adler Summer Conservatory went across from Radio City Music Hall to watch the stars go in. We saw Condola Rashad, Tom Hanks, Cicely Tyson, Jane Krakowsi, and Tony Shaloub to name a few. The highlight of the night was when Cuba Gooding, Jr. stood on top of the SUV he came in and played to the crowd. That is a man who really loves his fans, and I appreciate that. Then the actual show, screening in Times Square. Such a magical, communal experience. Everyone rooting for their favorite performers and shows, everyone secretly hoping that they will one day be graced with the honor of a nomination or even a win. “Broadway’s biggest night” was fun, inspirational, spellbinding... Here’s hoping that one day I won’t have to wait across the street, because I will be going in, even just to watch.
