MONOLODGE X
A fun night as usual, MONOLODGE was on a special night this month.
Not only was it my 21st birthday, but we also had such special guests in our midst. Everyone-from actress/guest host Chyna Layne & casting director Winsome Sinclair, to actors Donald Calliste, Jessie McClaren, Ryan Johnson, and Mavis Martin. Mavis’ performance was particularly inspiring for me. She’s the type of actress who finds such specific and detailed background for her character that it’s hard to even realize she is acting. She literally became the middle-aged Congolese woman she was playing. She went all the way there, something I didn’t fully realize until she came out of character. Ms. Martin is certainly a force to be reckoned with. I also found the improv to be particularly lively this show, with the volunteers (Jessie McClaren and Okema Moore) fully committing to their touchy yet funny subject of racial tensions in a southern 1940s jailhouse. Everyone just seemed so energized. Maybe it was all the amazing talent in the room, maybe it was the summer air, but there was something electric flowing through the lounge that night. I’m really loving this new über talented Monolodge family I’m gaining, and I can’t wait to see what next month brings!
